Twitter Adds 70 New Locations in Trending Feature

Twitter users will now be able to track trends on more local levels as Twitter adds 70 more locations. New countries include Japan, South Africa, Santiago, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur. Now users in over 100 international locations can see what trends are #hashing around them.

It's too bad that Twitter didn't have the option for Japan prior to the earthquake since we have seen the ways that Twitter can assist people in more quickly accessing vital information during times of unrest. Perhaps Twitter should try to develop a State of Emergency feature that could send out tweets to users in regions following natural disasters to share information about where they can go for aid and assistance. Thoughts?
