It's interesting to see facebook friend annoyance quantified like this. I definitely feel this way about some of my facebook friends, especially the "drama queen" archetype in the second chart.
I sort of have a love/hate relationship with facebook for this very reason. I love that it helps me stay connected with friends and co-workers I might otherwise have lost touch with. But I also hate that I have to see constant updates from people I don't really care about, but don't feel like I can un-friend.
Though, on the flipside, I also know a lot of people (of both genders) who like being facebook friends with people they don't really like, such as old high school classmates, just to keep an eye on what they're doing.
It'll be interesting to see how etiquette adapts in the future to include "rules" about facebook.
Yes this is definitely an issue on Facebook whether or not you care. I know many people that go through their list of friends and clean house every so often. It depends on your personality and who you are willing to friend.
Those charts were great by the way.
I don't have this problem on Facebook, but I definitely have it on Twitter. With Facebook, thankfully, the option is there to hide certain people's status updates (and I use it liberally). On Twitter I have some good friends who I know would be hurt or angry if i unfollowed them but whose posts I absolutely cannot stand (e.g., auto FourSquare forwarding. I just don't care where you went for lunch).
I love this article. It is so true. I have a lot of people that have friend on Facebook that they don't like but they wont delete them from the Facebook. Here are my ideas for the women types that don't un-friend. First, "I'm to nice" type, those who don't wanna hurt anybodies fillings even if they don't like them. Second, "look at me" type, those who want to show how great they are, and want the person they don't like to see it. Third, "stalkers" type, those who like to check peoples business even though they don't like them. Fourth type, "popularity quin", "I don't care I don't like you. you are making my friends number on Facebook, 2 more and its 2,000 people." What you think about my segregation? some more type ideas? Which one are you? :)
I think it is very clever to have charts that show our attitude to Facebook friends. This article is no only very true, but it also is thought provoking - maybe it is worth deleting some of the "friend" to live a less stressful life?
